The beach is situated in the old mining area of Mina de São Domingos, in the municipality of Mértola, in the interior of Alentejo. It is located next to the reservoir created by the Tapada Grande Dam, nestled between gentle slopes covered in cork oaks and strawberry trees.
The sandy beach and the grassy area extend to the edge of a calm water surface, offering a wide view of small river islands and the rolling hills that mark the horizon.
Native vegetation lines the water's edge, providing natural shade. The water remains clear and, in summer, reaches pleasant temperatures for swimming.
The contrast between the golden sand and the soft green of the surroundings creates a tranquil setting, where one can observe aquatic birds and hear only the gentle murmur of the wind and water.
The Tapada Grande reservoir was built between 1872 and 1882 to support mining operations in Achada do Gamo. Later, the area was adapted for leisure, with the inauguration of the bathing area in 2001.
Since 2012, the river beach has proudly flown the Blue Flag, attesting to the quality of the water and support infrastructure, such as periodic surveillance during the bathing season and essential facilities for those wishing to spend a peaceful day by the river.
