Praia do Castelo, often referred to as Ilha dos Amores (Island of Loves), is situated in the town of Fornos, within the municipality of Castelo de Paiva. This unique location marks the point where the Paiva River meets the imposing Douro River, creating a distinctive geographical setting. Its position, at the mouth of the Paiva, gives it a particular riverside landscape, characterized by the confluence of two important waterways.
The environment of Praia do Castelo is shaped by the union of these two rivers. The beach is of a fluvial nature, with a sandy area inviting relaxation. The central and most characteristic element of this place is a small island that rises in the middle of the waters, known as Ilha do Castelo (Castle Island) or, affectionately, Ilha dos Amores. This small piece of land contributes significantly to the scenic beauty of the whole and to the tranquility of the surrounding environment.
Ilha do Castelo holds traces of ancient history. Inside it, the structure of a hermitage dating back to the 15th century was discovered, an indication of its relevance throughout the centuries. The very morphology of the island, with contours suggesting ancient fortifications, gave rise to the legend of a mythical "Moorish castle," a narrative that intertwines with the toponymy and identity of the Castelo de Paiva region.
Praia do Castelo invites visitors to enjoy nature and the water. With its sandy beach and vast expanses of water, it is a suitable place for relaxing or for practicing various water activities. Alongside the river space, the presence of an outdoor swimming pool nearby offers an alternative for those who prefer swimming in a more controlled environment. There are also shaded areas, ideal for moments of rest by the river.
