Vagueira Beach is located in the municipality of Vagos, on the Portuguese Atlantic coast. It is characterized by an extensive sandy beach, flanked by a seawall that stretches along the coastline, ideal for walks. The beach environment includes a dune system, crossed by wooden boardwalks that invite exploration of the coastal landscape. To the east, the view encompasses cultivated fields and the proximity of the Aveiro Lagoon, contributing to its distinctive physiognomy.
The most distinctive element of Vagueira Beach is the practice of Arte Xávega, an ancient and particular form of artisanal fishing. This task involves small boats, sometimes crescent-shaped, that venture into the surf to cast nets a short distance from the beach. Subsequently, the nets are pulled ashore. Traditionally, this task was aided by teams of oxen, but nowadays, the use of tractors is more common for this purpose. The continuity of this tradition depends on sea and tide conditions.
The environmental quality of Vagueira Beach is recognized, having been awarded the Blue Flag since 1989, in addition to receiving the "Golden Beach" classification attributed by Quercus. The sea, with its waves, makes the beach a sought-after location for surfing and bodyboarding, as well as for other water sports including canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding. The access conditions, with a ramped beach, make it suitable for swimming and various water activities.
Throughout the year, Vagueira Beach offers an inviting environment for walks along the sea and on the boardwalks, allowing visitors to enjoy the sea air. During the summer months, the beach gains a livelier atmosphere, with a series of cultural and leisure initiatives. These include open-air cinema sessions, fitness classes, concerts, and local fairs, which enrich the visitor experience.
