Alta Vila Municipal Park is located in the city of Águeda, specifically in the urban area of Alta Vila. Positioned atop a hillside, it offers natural proximity to the Águeda River and stands out as the largest green space in the locality, spanning over three hectares.
The genesis of Alta Vila Municipal Park dates back to the late 19th century, a period when it was conceived by its then-owner, Dr. Eduardo Caldeira. The project reflects the architectural and landscaping trends prevalent in 19th-century Europe, marked by a blend of romantic and medieval inspirations. This revivalist style, evident in the urbanism of the time, shaped the park's visual identity and unique ambiance since its creation.
The park's layout is characterized by irregularly winding paths, leading visitors through a series of constructed elements. One can observe various ruins and artificial grottoes, as well as walls adorned with watchtowers and battlements, all erected in stone and adobe. In the center of the space, a stone and wood chalet stands out, which once served as the owners' residence. Beside it is the old hunting lodge. The park also includes a bandstand, a small chapel, and the former guard's house. The natural setting is enhanced by a serene lake with delicate bridges, and by the presence of a vast collection of exotic species that, over time, have formed a tall and luxuriant tree canopy.
Currently, Alta Vila Municipal Park remains a vast and pleasant space for leisure and recreation. It provides an environment of quietude and serenity, distinct within the urban context. It is an inviting place for walks, where tranquility prevails. Among its amenities, the availability of a tennis court stands out, adding an option for visitors' sports activities.
