The Senhora da Mó Panoramic Viewpoint is located on the summit of the mount of the same name, which rises above the village of Arouca. Situated at an altitude of 711 meters, this place occupies a central position within the territory classified as Arouca Geopark. It is integrated into the Senhora da Mó area, in the locality and municipality of Arouca.

A Broad Perspective

This viewpoint offers a striking view over the vast surrounding region. From there, it is possible to contemplate the village of Arouca, stretching across the valleys. The gaze also reaches the imposing Freita and Arada mountains, as well as the areas bordering the Paiva River. On days with greater visibility, one can spot the Ria de Aveiro and, on some occasions, the Porto area. The presence of a large cross, which illuminates at dusk, serves as a reference point and landmark in the landscape.

The Chapel and the Legend

At the highest point of the mount, there is a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Mó. The architecture of this chapel is notable for its peculiar contours, which include features that allude to Arab influence, and its construction is presumed to be from the 16th century. Its configuration distinguishes itself from other Christian chapels by its originality. A local legend tells the story of a Christian who, imprisoned with a millstone above him, implored Our Lady of the Mó and was miraculously freed. This feat is celebrated annually, on September 7th and 8th, in a festival that honors Our Lady of the Mó as the protector of fields, harvests, and animals, and guardian against droughts and thunderstorms. It is said that from this chapel, it is possible to see its "six sisters," other Marian hermitages scattered across the neighboring elevations.

Recognized as a geosite, the Senhora da Mó Mount is a place where nature is fully present. The surrounding area invites tranquility, with spaces for picnics and trails that allow for walks and other outdoor activities. The quality of the air and the serenity experienced at the site contribute to an experience of connection with the natural environment. Watching the sunset from this panoramic viewpoint is considered a particularly beautiful moment, with the twilight colors painting the vast horizon.
