The Nora de Valmaior is located along the banks of the Caima River, in the Valmaior area, which is part of the locality of Santo António, in the municipality of Albergaria-a-Velha. Its position offers direct contact with the fluvial environment and a serene natural setting.
The Nora de Valmaior is an ancient-design engenho or water wheel, conceived for water abstraction. This type of structure represents a legacy of past agricultural and water management practices, demonstrating traditional techniques for ingeniously utilizing natural resources.
This unique hydraulic device is not present year-round on the riverbank, being a seasonal installation. Typically, its operation and characteristic presence can be observed between the months of May and September, a period when its wheel completes the riparian landscape and invites observation of its manual ingenuity.
