The Macinhata do Vouga Museum Centre is located in the old Macinhata do Vouga Railway Station, a locality in the municipality of Águeda. This positioning is particularly significant, as the museum is part of the Vouga Line itself, a railway line that holds the distinction of being the only narrow-gauge line still in operation in the country. Being within the station itself lends the museum space authenticity and a direct connection to the historic railway environment.
The museum occupies the premises of the station's old engine shed, a space that, by its very nature, evokes the original function of the site. Since its foundation in 1981, this centre has had the mission to preserve the memory of an important railway link which, until 1990, connected Viseu and Espinho, also incorporating the Aveiro Branch Line. The permanent exhibition invites an immersion into the history of railway transport, revealing its profound influence on the development of the Vouga Valley and the identity of its communities over time.
One of the most striking features of this museum lies in its valuable collection of vehicles, many of which are notable examples of national design and manufacture. Several of these examples were produced between 1940 and 1947 in the Sernada do Vouga Workshops, attesting to the capability and innovation of the Portuguese industry of the time. Among the various vehicles and objects that make up the collection, the National Railcars ME 51 and ME 53 stand out, frequently referred to as “Auto Rail”. These unique pieces were built from the chassis of “Panhard” trucks, illustrating the ingenuity and technical adaptation characteristic of Portuguese railway development.
