The Freirôa Mills are located in the village of Rendo, in the municipality of Albergaria-a-Velha, nestled deep within the Caima river valley. This river, known for its constant flow, has been a privileged location since ancient times for the establishment of a vast number of mills, among which Freirôa stands out as one of the most remarkable examples.
Access to this milling complex is via a forest path, which may present uneven and steep sections with some loose stones. This route follows part of what was the ancient Miller's Path, a historical route used to connect communities. The use of sturdy and appropriate footwear for walking is recommended, ensuring a more comfortable and safe experience when engaging with this natural and history-rich environment.
Considered one of the largest and oldest milling complexes in the region, the Freirôa Mills represent a complex with unique characteristics, reflecting the importance of the Caima river in the lives of rural communities. During its period of greatest activity, this site housed approximately fourteen pairs of millstones, distributed among several mill houses and annexed structures.
Beyond the grinding of cereals, these complementary buildings served various essential functions. They acted as storage facilities for sacks of grain and flour, and also as corrals, providing shelter for the animals used by the millers for transportation. The architectural and functional ensemble of the Freirôa Mills is a testament to traditional engineering and the organization of daily life for past generations.
Throughout the first decades of the 21st century, the Freirôa Mills underwent restoration interventions with the purpose of preserving this heritage. However, their structures today show the marks of time and exposure to natural elements, a testament to the resilience and long history of this milling complex.
A visit to the Freirôa Mills is an invitation to immerse oneself in a setting where the tranquility of the Caima valley harmonizes with the historical grandeur of these constructions. It allows for the contemplation of what was a vital milling center, maintaining its essence and the echo of generations of millers who left their mark there.
