The Church of Santo António is located in the Lomba area, an area integrated into the locality of Vagos e Santo António, in the municipality of Vagos. It is situated in an urban environment of this parish.
This church, completed in 1971, features architecture that fits within the post-conciliar period. One of its most striking visual elements is the cladding of the facade and tower in red ceramic, which gives it a distinctive appearance. On the exterior of the church, a large image of Saint Anthony, crafted in white marble, is visible.
Inside, the church is characterized by a spacious nave. The back wall, clad in stone, stands out by featuring a large representation of Christ crucified at its center. The interior also houses large-scale contemporary images, carved in wood by Avelino Moreira Vinhas. These pieces represent Saint Anthony of Lisbon, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the Sacred Heart of Mary.
The current church was built to replace an earlier chapel, which had existed on the same site since the beginning of the 19th century. This primitive chapel was demolished in 1964, making way for the construction of the current building, which was completed in 1971. The creation of the parish of Santo António de Vagos, separated from the parish of Vagos, occurred in 1956, encompassing several places, including Lomba.
Annually, the community celebrates the feast in honor of its patron saint, Saint Anthony. This festivity takes place on June 13th or on the closest weekend to that date, being an important moment in the life of the parish and the Lomba area.
