Jardim 27 de Janeiro is located on Rua 27 de Janeiro, in a quiet residential area of Águeda. It is within walking distance of the town centre, surrounded by residential buildings and other urban green spaces.
The slight slope of the terrain is accompanied by pathways of Portuguese pavement, leading visitors from the urban public space to this green corner.
Its name simply reflects the street it is on, without formal celebrations linked to the date. Over time, the garden gained local importance as a meeting and social gathering point, preserving a sense of calm in an evolving neighbourhood.
The large canopy trees (mainly plane trees and young cork oaks) create refreshing shaded areas, while the well-maintained lawn invites moments of relaxation in any season.
At its centre stands a deactivated field artillery piece, mounted on wooden and iron wheels. This cannon, typical of the early 20th century, now serves as a memorial to the military past, offering a curious focal point amidst nature.
Nearby benches allow for detailed observation of the structure, and the contrast between the aged metal and the intense green of the lawn creates interesting photographic compositions, especially in the morning or at dusk.
January 27th commemorates the "Battle of Barreiras," where monarchist troops were halted on the outskirts of Águeda, preventing their advance towards Lisbon. The republican victory in this confrontation was decisive in establishing the Republic in Portugal.
This episode remains alive in collective memory, and the presence of the cannon in the garden reinforces the historical link between the site and the events that shaped the country.
