The Agadão Parish Church is located in the Lomba area, in the locality of Agadão, within the municipality of Águeda. The building stands in an elevated position on the hillside, slightly above the level of the main road that crosses the village.
Access to the church is via staircases, leading to a paved enclosure, flanked by a wall, which surrounds the temple. Its location at the highest point gives it a striking presence in the local landscape.
The origins of the Agadão Parish Church date back to the second half of the 18th century. It was during this period that the main building was constructed, serving since then as the religious center of the community.
Over the years, the church underwent various interventions, including restoration work and the addition of lateral sections that modified its original configuration, adapting it to the needs of the parish over time.
Externally, the church features plastered facades painted white, contrasting with granite stonework elements. The main facade displays an entrance portal with an elaborate frame, topped by a cornice and a curved pediment, which denotes Baroque style influences.
On this facade, there is also a semi-circular niche with a shell-shaped canopy and an enlarged oculus, decorative elements that enrich its composition. Adjoining the nave, the two-story bell tower stands out, with openings for the bells and topped by a pyramidal spire.
The interior of the church is whitewashed, featuring a wainscoting of blue and white patterned tiles that contributes to the ambiance of the space. The wooden ceiling of the nave is one of its most interesting features, divided into multiple coffers.
Each of these coffers is artistically painted with representations of biblical scenes, including episodes from the Infancy and Passion of Christ, moments from the Life of the Virgin Mary, and figures of various Saints.
The artistic richness is also evident in the altarpieces, notable works of gilded and polychromed woodcarving, executed in the second half of the 18th century in the Baroque style. The main altarpiece and the side altars display a profusion of columns, corbels, baldachins, and statuary, creating a decorative ensemble of great value inside the church.
