The Church of Escariz is located in Vale de Lameiro, in the village of Escariz, municipality of Arouca. Situated in a gentle valley, it is surrounded by a small walled churchyard with granite sett paving.
Around it, agricultural fields and a parish cemetery extend, while to the west appear vineyards and groves that highlight the rural character of the place.
Erected in the early 18th century, the parish of Escariz appears in 1758 in the Parish Memories as a temple dedicated to Saint Andrew, with four main altars.
In 1799, an inscription on the tower marks the renovation of the façade and the construction of the bell tower.
Throughout the 19th century, it gained a new triumphal arch and a side porch. More recently, in 1999, the nave was extended, adding a porch supported by Tuscan columns.
Of polygonal plan, it features a single nave composed of two distinct bodies and a chancel. The bell tower, attached to the left side of the façade, rises in two registers and culminates in a pyramidal spire crowned by an armillary sphere.
On the main façade, the portal with a cushioned lintel and the choir window connected by trapezoidal stonework stand out; inside, the pulpit in molded stone, the triumphal arch with closing pilasters decorated with acanthus, and the wooden coffered ceilings are noteworthy.
The churchyard, walled and delineated by granite setts, incorporates a Cross of the Passion sculpted on a cushioned eaves. This outdoor space invites a quiet pause before entering the temple.
Around it, the rural surroundings offer perspectives of vineyards, fields, and wooded slopes. The light tones of the granite and the golden details of the altarpieces create a harmonious contrast with the green of the valley.
