The Carboniferous Conglomerate is located in Gamarão de Cima, an area belonging to the locality of Canelas and Espiunca, in the municipality of Arouca. This site is one of the geological points of interest that make up the recognized Arouca Geopark, an area classified by UNESCO for its remarkable natural and geological heritage. Its location allows visitors to have direct contact with one of the most significant rock formations in the region, framed within a landscape that reflects the natural richness of the territory.
This impressive rock formation is a conglomerate of base, transporting us directly to the Carboniferous period, a moment in Earth's history dating back millions of years. The conglomerate has a considerable thickness, varying between 25 and 30 meters, and is composed of a vast quantity of "pebbles" or rock fragments. Some of these fragments are remarkably large, reaching up to two meters in diameter. Its formation resulted from the accumulation of debris from older rocks, predominantly grey quartzites, which originated from formations of the Ordovician period, thus revealing deep layers of our planet's geological history.
Upon close observation of the Carboniferous Conglomerate, one discovers a fascinating diversity of materials that compose it. In addition to quartzites, it is possible to identify fragments of flint, quartz, and phyllites, although the latter are present in smaller quantities and with smaller dimensions. Most of the pebbles are characteristically rounded, an indication that they were transported and polished by the action of natural forces over vast periods of time. However, the fragments of phyllite stand out for their more irregular shape, creating an interesting visual contrast and a unique texture in this monumental rock.
