District: Aveiro > Albergaria-a-Velha > Albergaria-a-Velha > Campinho

Location

The Parish Centre of Albergaria-a-Velha is situated in the Campinho area, in the heart of the town of Albergaria-a-Velha. It is located in an urban environment, surrounded by private houses, with an inviting churchyard extending in front of its main facade. Its central position, at the crossroads of some of the town's main streets, makes it an easily identifiable point for those exploring the area.

History and Resilience

The history of this place dates back to the creation of the parish in the distant year of 1496. However, the construction of the church we know today officially began with the laying of the first stone in 1692. Over the centuries, the building has witnessed and overcome challenges, such as the fire of 1759, which, despite destroying a large part of the structure, could not erase its essence, leaving the chancel and some images intact. The community's resilience ensured its prompt repair and, subsequently, several expansion and restoration works, which consolidated its importance as a religious and heritage centre of the town.

Architecture and Exterior Appearance

The architecture of the Parish Centre presents an interesting fusion of Mannerist and Baroque styles, visible in its composition and details. The main facade, painted white, is characterised by a straight-lintel portal, above which the date 1692 stands out, marking its origin. The bell tower, attached to the right side, rises with its dome and houses a clock. The side and rear facades are equally sober, with openings that allow light to enter and reveal the building's functionality over time.

The Interior and Artistic Richness

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by an interior that, despite being predominantly painted white, holds a remarkable artistic richness. The nave walls are enhanced by a dado of tiles with monochromatic blue and white patterns, lending an atmosphere of serenity. The wooden ceiling of the nave is divided into multiple coffers, while the chancel features a false barrel vault in stucco, decorated with rosettes. The main highlight is the gilded carving: the main altar, from the 17th century, represents the splendour of National Baroque, with its deep tribune and twisted columns elegantly decorated with vegetal motifs. The side and collateral altars, in turn, are examples of Joanine Baroque from the second half of the 18th century, displaying elaborate niches and sacred imagery protected by gilded baldachins. A pipe organ in the upper choir and the medallions illustrating the Stations of the Cross along the nave complete the visual experience, inviting contemplation of the local religious art.
