The Oliva Art Centre is located in the city of São João da Madeira, prominently integrated into its urban fabric. This cultural space occupies the premises of the former Oliva factory, an example of the reconversion of the region's industrial heritage into cultural hubs. Its location allows visitors to discover an artistic and historical dimension within the city's landscape.
The history of the Oliva Art Centre is inseparable from the place it occupies. The premises that today house the art collections were once the heart of Oliva, a factory with a significant role in São João da Madeira's industrial history. This transformation allows visitors to experience the fusion between the building's industrial past and its current vocation as an art hub, lending a unique atmosphere to the cultural experience.
At the heart of the Oliva Art Centre lies a vast collection, comprising approximately three thousand works of art from two important private collections. The Norlinda and José Lima Collection brings together a wide selection of contemporary art, ranging from the 1920s to the present day. It includes works by hundreds of artists, both Portuguese and foreign, exploring various forms of expression such as painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, installations, and video. In parallel, the Treger/Saint Silvestre Collection, dedicated to Art Brut, presents over fifteen hundred works, offering an overview of the evolution of this singular artistic movement, with pieces dating from the late 19th century.
One of the distinguishing aspects of the Oliva Art Centre is its focus on Art Brut, sometimes referred to as Outsider Art. This concept, introduced by artist Jean Dubuffet, refers to artistic creations that emerge outside established canons and conventions of the fine arts world. The Art Brut works on display invite reflection on spontaneous creativity, detached from academic or commercial influences, revealing genuine and original worldviews from each creator.
