The Aguieiras Waterfall is located in the village of Chieira, in the municipality of Arouca, and is situated within the imposing Paiva Gorge. This remarkable waterfall can be admired from various perspectives along the right bank of the Paiva River. The most privileged views are available from established observation points that follow the river's course, offering a unique setting over the surrounding landscape.
The Aguieiras Waterfall is formed by the successive cascades of the Ribeira da Chieira, a tributary of the Paiva River. This stream originates from the confluence of several small water lines that traverse the parish of Alvarenga. Its waters plunge down the granitic escarpments, across a series of drops totaling approximately 140 meters, creating a scenery of great natural beauty.
The origin and morphology of the Aguieiras Waterfall are deeply related to the geological structure of the region. The Ribeira da Chieira exploited the orthogonal fractures, known as diaclases (joints), present in the granitic massif of Alvarenga, to carve its path to the Paiva River. In this area, the Paiva River carved a deep, canyon-shaped valley into the granite itself, highlighting the erosive power of water and the rock's resistance over millions of years.
