Located in the Fontela area, in Avanca, within the municipality of Estarreja, the Egas Moniz House-Museum stands in an urban, yet reserved environment. It is part of the property known as Quinta do Marinheiro, bordered by an imposing walled enclosure with a noble entrance portal, giving it a distinct character harmonious with the surrounding constructions.
This house was the birthplace of António Egas Moniz, the distinguished Portuguese recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1949, in recognition of his pioneering contributions to medicine. Without direct descendants, Egas Moniz expressed the wish that his home and its valuable collections be preserved and shared. Thus, the house was transformed into a museum and opened its doors in 1968, keeping alive the memory of one of Portugal's most notable scientists.
Originally an 18th-century building, the Egas Moniz House-Museum was extensively remodeled in 1915, based on a project by architect Ernesto Korrodi, with contributions from Álvaro Miranda da Granja for the decoration. The building features a fascinating fusion of Art Nouveau and eclectic styles, visible in its exterior details and the irregular arrangement of its volumes. A notable feature is a tile panel by Jorge Colaço on the west facade. Inside, spread across three floors, a classical harmony prevails, with elements such as ornate ceilings, wooden paneling, and a private oratory on the second floor, transporting visitors to the atmosphere of the era.
The House-Museum's collection is a fascinating testament to Egas Moniz's life and passions. Exploring its various spaces, visitors will discover a wide range of art collections, including paintings (with works by Portuguese and Flemish artists), ceramics (from East India Company porcelains to Vista Alegre pieces), furniture in various styles, silverware, glass, and tapestries. Alongside its artistic side, the house houses a scientific section dedicated to Egas Moniz's revolutionary discoveries, namely cerebral angiography and prefrontal leucotomy, presenting objects and documents that illustrate his innovative journey and scientific legacy.
