Casa dos Malafaias, also known as Casa Grande (Big House), is located in the centre of the village of Arouca. It stands on Rua Dr. Figueiredo Sobrinho, one of the most characteristic streets of the urban cluster, along the route leading to Calvário. Its central location allows for an unobstructed view of the façade and its architectural imposingness, making it a striking feature in the landscape of Arouca village.

Architecture and Heritage

This building stands out as one of the most remarkable in Arouca. Its construction, predominantly in granite, dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, reflecting the importance and nobility of its former owners. The architectural complex is composed of three distinct sections, which include a chapel and two residential units, in addition to an extensive garden stretching alongside the property. Upon observing the main façade, details of a door and a window can be noticed, featuring Manueline style elements.

Testimonies from the Past

The history of Casa dos Malafaias is deeply intertwined with that of the influential family that gave it its name, the Malafaias, which included commendators and captains-major of Arouca among its members. On the main façade, an imposing coat of arms stands out, bringing together the symbols of the Malafaia, Mascarenhas, and Castro Pereira families, commissioned by one of their descendants. A less obvious, but equally fascinating detail, is found on one of the building's side walls: a mark indicating the rise of the waters of Ribeiro Marialva. This stream, once open-air and prone to flooding, was canalized in the 20th century, and the mark remains as a testament to the urban landscape of yesteryear.

Casa dos Malafaias is recognized as a Property of Municipal Interest, which underscores its heritage relevance. Being a private property, its observation is exclusively from the exterior. This condition does not diminish the interest of a visit, as its façade and surroundings offer a rich perspective on the history and stately architecture of the region, making it a visual and cultural landmark in the landscape of Arouca.
