Chapel of the Lord of the Riverside

Category: Religious Architecture > Church

District: Aveiro > Estarreja > Igreja

Location:

The chapel is located next to the pier of Ribeira de Veiros, one of the branches connecting this land to the Ria de Aveiro. It is slightly set apart from the central core of Veiros village, which contributes to a more tranquil environment, with its proximity to the riverside area.

A Story of Faith and Discovery:

The chapel's existence is linked to a particular event that occurred in 1742. The story goes that, in that year, a twelve-year-old girl named Isabel found a small metal image of Christ while working in a cornfield. As she kept the image with her, reports of alleged miracles associated with it soon began to spread, attracting popular attention and devotion.

The increasing number of faithful led, ten years after the discovery, to the construction of a provisional wooden chapel to house the image. The need for a larger and more durable space motivated the construction of the current building, completed in 1753. Isabel, the protagonist of this discovery, dedicated her life to the service of the chapel, becoming a hermitess from a young age until the end of her days.

Focus of Devotion:

Naturally, the main worship in the chapel focuses on the figure of the Lord of Ribeira (Senhor da Ribeira), directly associated with the found image. However, over time, devotion to Saint Anthony also gained space and importance, reflecting the affection and faith the population has for this saint.

Throughout the history of this place of worship, many faithful have expressed their gratitude and faith through the offering of ex-votos dedicated to the Lord of Ribeira.

Architectural Features:

The chapel features simple and traditional architectural lines. The façade is topped by a triangular pediment, flanked by ornaments resembling finials at the corners and surmounted by a cross at the center. The entrance portal has an oculus in its upper part and is crowned by a small pediment.

Inside, the chancel stands out for its polychrome carved altarpiece. This is where the image of the Lord of Ribeira is located, placed in a central niche, now supported by a cross. Flanking it, there are two more altarpieces in the same style, where golden elements contrast with white backgrounds and the sky-blue of the side columns.
