Located in the historical center of Arouca, opposite the Monastery of Santa Maria de Arouca, this chapel represents the Mannerist religious architecture of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, influenced by Italy, but with a Portuguese touch.
The facade features a portal with a foundation inscription, pilasters, rectangular transoms, and a 19th-century bell tower. The triangular gable includes an oculus and a shield with the royal arms of the 18th century.
The interior space maintains its original 17th-century structure, with a division between the chancel and the remaining space, decorated with early 17th-century tiles with vegetal and geometric patterns. The gilded wood carvings and paintings depict Christological, Marian, and hagiographic themes from the 18th century.
The main altarpiece is made of carved and gilded wood, following the Mannerist style. The Chapel of Senhor dos Passos, on the left side, has a gilded carved altarpiece from the late Baroque period. On the right side, a door from 1714 provides access to the sacristy.
The ceiling of the main nave features paintings of saints of the Catholic Church, including apostles, evangelists, and doctors of the church. Scenes from the Passion of Christ are prominent, relating to the Procissão dos Fogaréus, a local tradition.
The Chapel of Misericórdia is a welcoming space of historical and artistic value, offering a unique opportunity to appreciate the rich religious and cultural heritage of Arouca. It is a recommended destination for tourists interested in history, art, and local traditions.
