This monumental complex is situated in the parish of Arouca and Burgo, in the centre of the village of Arouca, on a granite outcrop north of the locality, on the old Rua da Arca. The terrain where it is located is rugged and natural, providing a setting that enhances the symbolic and contemplative character of the space. The area is integrated into an urban zone, close to typical streets, where other crosses forming part of the Way of the Cross are dispersed.
The surroundings, marked by stone and a slight elevation, confer a calm and introspective atmosphere, suitable for the religious nature of the complex.
The Calvary of Arouca is composed of six granite crosses erected in the 17th century, with the central cross dating from 1627 being particularly noteworthy. Each cross is mounted on a quadrangular pedestal, with a pilaster topped by a simple capital and a Latin cross. The forms are austere and rough, reflecting the regional tradition of Mannerist crosses, with discreet geometric motifs at the base of some pieces.
This calvary represents the symbolic site of the crucifixion, with the central cross symbolizing Christ, flanked by the two thieves, according to Christian tradition. The complex maintains its authenticity and offers a significant example of local 17th-century religious heritage.
Next to the Calvary, a granite pulpit stands out, dated 1643, with an unusual cylindrical shape. It rests on a narrower cylindrical base and is accessible by a small stairway. This pulpit was used during religious ceremonies, particularly during Lenten processions.
Adjacent is a niche, or wayside shrine, which features a round arch and is topped by a cross. This element complements the complex, reinforcing the connection between faith and public space.
This complex was commissioned by the Brotherhood of the Lord's Passion, established in 1621 in the Chapel of Misericórdia in Arouca. The brotherhood organised the Procession of the Passion from 1626 onwards, which included a walk to this Calvary during the Lenten celebrations.
Today, this tradition remains alive with the Procession of the Torches, held on Maundy Thursday, which maintains the connection between the space and the community, evoking the journey and religious sermons of the past.
