The Bico Quay is located in the town of Murtosa, in the Canto da Pocinha area. This site offers a wide opening to the Murtosa canal, set within the context of the Ria de Aveiro. It is one of the largest quay complexes in the municipality, benefiting from a privileged position by the water.
To the west of the quay, there is a sandy area known as Bico Beach. This beach, recognized as a bathing area since 2016, offers an environment of tranquility and natural beauty, making it a prime spot to enjoy the lagoon's landscape.
Historically, the Bico Quay was a hub of great activity in the region. It was a crucial point for unloading various essential products, such as moliço (seaweed used as fertilizer), salt, and construction materials. In the mid-20th century, it served as an anchoring and unloading site for over 250 moliceiro boats, testifying to the intense fluvial traffic of the time.
A notable aspect of its history is the existence of a shipyard on site. It was here that important luggers for the national cod fishing fleet were built, such as the “Ligeiro” (1920), the “Maria da Conceição” (1922), and the “Maria das Flores” (1946). Currently, the quay maintains its purpose, serving as a working base for an active fishing community, as evidenced by the presence of numerous boats in the eastern shelter port.
Beyond its historical and functional relevance, the Bico Quay offers a rich and inviting natural setting. The tranquility of the surroundings and the beauty of the Murtosa canal provide an ideal environment for a relaxed stroll along the water. During low tide, with some luck, it is possible to spot flocks of flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) resting or feeding there, adding a special touch to the landscape.
