Located in Aveiro, in the Glória area, Parque da Macaca is one of the city's most emblematic green spaces. Its central and urban location contributes to it being an accessible point of tranquility, offering a green lung in the heart of Aveiro. An iron pedestrian bridge, a distinctive element of the park, offers perspectives on the urban surroundings and allows connection between different levels of this historic garden.

Origins and Memory

The history of Parque da Macaca dates back to the mid-19th century, when the area it now occupies was part of the land cultivated by Franciscan friars, adjacent to the Convent of Santo António. What began as "Campo de Santo António" (Saint Anthony's Field) was transformed into "Passeio Público" (Public Promenade) in 1861. After several expansion and renovation works, the park was officially inaugurated in 1927. Its popular nickname, "Parque da Macaca" (Monkey Park), derives from a historical curiosity: the existence of a cage that, in times, housed a monkey and other birds, becoming a landmark in the city's collective memory.

A Natural Refuge

This green space stands out for its natural richness, presenting notable biodiversity in both flora and fauna. Walking along its avenues allows observation of a variety of plants and trees that contribute to a fresh and inviting environment. The park is also home to various aquatic birds, namely ducks, which can be seen enjoying small structures designed for their well-being, adding a touch of wildlife to the urban landscape.

Routes and Scenery

In addition to the natural environment, Parque da Macaca integrates various scenic and recreational elements that invite exploration and enjoyment. A small lake lends serenity to the environment, complemented by an iron bandstand that still serves as a stage for various events today. The route through the park reveals architectural structures such as an elegant colonnade, an imposing staircase, and an artificial grotto, which add a touch of charm and mystery. Throughout the park, there are also outdoor fitness equipment, as well as grassy areas and stone tables, ideal for a quiet break or a moment of socializing.
