The Pillory: Memory and Symbolism

In the heart of Praça da República stands the Pillory of Angeja, a remarkable construction erected in the 20th century. This monument, which evokes the typology of ancient medieval pillories, was carefully built in limestone ashlar, using the distinct Ançã stone.

Its detailed structure includes a quadrangular plinth of three steps, upon which rests a parallelepiped pedestal. The column features a pseudo-Attic base, a cylindrical shaft, and a Tuscan capital. The top of the pillory is an ornamented block, where the municipality's coats of arms and the armillary sphere with the Cross of Christ stand out, elements of deep historical and heraldic significance. Traces of the restraint irons can still be observed, a reminder of its original symbolism.

The Square and its Fountain:

In addition to the pillory, the square is enriched by the presence of a fountain. This traditional element contributes to the serene and welcoming atmosphere of the space, inviting a moment of pause and contemplation.
