The Church of São Pedro is located in the parish of the same name, integrated into the town of Vila Franca do Campo, on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores. Situated on the south coast of the island, this area has a historical connection to its settlement, marking a significant presence in the urban landscape of the town.
The origin of the Church of São Pedro dates back to a primitive hermitage, which preceded the current structure on the same site. After the great earthquake of 1522, which considerably affected the region, a new temple was erected, becoming the religious center of the area. Over the centuries, the church was the target of significant donations and legacies. In the 18th century, in 1746, a major renovation began that completely altered its physiognomy, giving it the appearance that can be observed today. These works lasted for twelve years, with the church being officially blessed in 1758, assuming a central role in the life of the community ever since.
The Church of São Pedro stands out for its notable Baroque facade, which reflects the dominant style of the great works of the 18th century. On the exterior, in a niche on the facade, it is possible to observe a stone image of Saint Peter, dating back to the 16th century and believed to come from the old hermitage. Inside, the altar-mor altarpiece stands out, an exemplary work in gilded carving, which arrived from Portugal in 1754 along with the main image of Saint Peter. In the Altar das Almas, there is also an image of Our Lady of Lourdes, offered in 1892. The church is classified as a Property of Public Interest, which underlines its artistic and historical value.
