The Main Church of São Sebastião is located in the heart of São Sebastião village, in the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, on Terceira Island. It is situated within the urban area of the village, on a wide churchyard that gives it prominence in the local landscape.
Its central position in the settlement facilitates access and allows visitors to observe the integration of the historic building into the village environment, surrounded by spaces that invite pause and contemplation.
The history of this temple dates back to 1455, making it one of the oldest constructions on the island, directly linked to the early days of its settlement. Over the centuries, the church underwent various interventions, including important conservation and expansion works in the 16th century.
A large fire in 1789 affected its interior, requiring restoration work that was completed in 1795. Later, from the 1960s onwards, significant restorations were carried out, allowing the recovery of part of its original structure and important artistic elements.
The building features a longitudinal plan with three naves, demonstrating characteristics of a solid and traditional construction. The main facade, with its stepped form reflecting the internal division of the naves, invites entry through a main Manueline-style portal, with an ogival arch and carved details that draw attention.
The side facades have doors and windows that punctuate the masonry. The bell tower, with a square base and crowned by a pyramidal pinnacle, rises laterally and houses the baptistery at its base, built in the 17th century with a stone vault.
Inside, the church reveals valuable details. The naves are separated by arches resting on simple columns. The chancel and the lateral apsidioles are covered by vaults, some with ribs and decorated bosses.
One of its greatest highlights are the mural paintings on the side walls, discovered in the 20th century. These late-medieval frescoes are considered unique in the Azores archipelago. They depict various figures and scenes, such as Saint Martin, Saint Barbara, the apparition of Christ to Mary Magdalene, and Saint Sebastian, offering a rare testimony of the pictorial art of the time on the island.
The sacristy also holds notable pieces, including a carved stone lavabo, old cabinets made of Brazilian hardwood, and a set of 16th-century paintings on wood illustrating moments from the life of the patron saint, Saint Sebastian.
