The Military Trenches are located in the Biscoitos, a parish on the north coast of Terceira Island, in the municipality of Praia da Vitória. This specific location, known as Outeiro dos Lagadouros, offers a perspective of the coastline, situated in an area characterized by volcanic rock formations and its proximity to the sea.

A Legacy of War

This complex of trenches dates back to the time of World War II, forming part of the defensive system of Terceira Island during that period. Its creation aimed to protect this section of the Azores coast, at a time when territorial defense was of crucial importance. The trenches were, therefore, a fundamental part of the coastal surveillance and protection strategy, prepared for potential threats.

Defensive Structure

The trenches were excavated directly into the basaltic gravel, an abundant material on the island, which gives them natural robustness and integrates them into the local landscape. They have two access points at their extremities, facilitating movement and defense organization. During their period of use, these structures were equipped with military equipment, including machine guns and mortars, ready to defend the coast of Biscoitos.

Currently, the Military Trenches are in a good state of conservation, the result of recovery work that has maintained their integrity.
