The Sociedade Filarmónica União Faialense (Faialense Union Philharmonic Society) has its headquarters on Rua Capelo Ivens, in the parish of Angústias, in the city of Horta. Angústias is an area with a distinctly urban environment and a strong connection to the history and identity of Horta, being one of the most traditional parishes on Faial Island. Its central location in the city facilitates access and integration into local dynamics.
Founded on May 17, 1897, initially under the name "União Musical" (Musical Union), this philharmonic society represents a cultural pillar in the Faialense community. Its creation resulted from the enthusiasm and dedication of the then parish priest of Angústias, Roque Morais, and several parishioners, who saw music as a vehicle for fellowship and cultural expression. Throughout its history, the society has been a guardian of musical traditions, dedicating itself to Our Lady of Angústias, the patron saint of the parish, which underscores its deep connection to local roots.
With over a century of existence, the Sociedade Filarmónica União Faialense maintains continuous activity, cultivating a passion for music across different generations. Its orchestra is composed of musicians of various ages, from the youngest, who are taking their first steps, to the most experienced, who share their knowledge. The existence of a music school is fundamental to ensure the future of the philharmonic, training new talents and ensuring that the musical legacy is perpetuated. The philharmonic's presence is notable in the island's celebrations and events, demonstrating its importance and vitality in Horta's cultural life.
