Located in the São Sebastião area, in the heart of Ponta Delgada. The building is situated near Largo de São João, in a central and easily accessible part of the city.
The name 'Micaelense' has its roots in an older theatre in the city, which unfortunately was destroyed in a fire in the early 20th century. The current site, before housing this cultural building, was the location of a church and convent. The construction of the theatre we know today dates back to the 1950s, having undergone renovation and modernization works, reopening its doors in 2004.
The design of the building is the responsibility of architect Raul Rodrigues Lima. Its presence in the São Sebastião area stands out due to its imposing architecture, giving it a prominent place in Ponta Delgada's urban environment.
Currently, Teatro Micaelense plays a central role in the cultural life of the region, functioning as a cultural and congress center. Its facilities host a variety of events, including diverse shows and other cultural activities, and the building is classified as a Property of Public Interest.
