The complex of the Church and Convent of São Francisco is located in the São Pedro area, in Vila Franca do Campo. It is situated in an area that allows for easy exploration of the town on foot, being close to the urban center. Its position offers a perspective of the local surroundings, with its proximity to the coastline and the possibility of viewing the sea and the well-known Ilhéu de Vila Franca in the distance.
The history of this remarkable architectural complex begins right after the devastating earthquake of 1522, which destroyed the original Franciscan convent of Vila Franca do Campo, then located in another area. It was by direct determination of King D. João III, in 1524, that the construction of a new convent for the Order of Friars Minor was ordered, with works beginning as early as 1525. The church's design is traditionally attributed to Friar Afonso de Toledo.
The church is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. Chroniclers of the time, such as Friar Agostinho de Monte Alverne, described the church as "beautiful," highlighting the edifice's beauty in its early days.
For centuries, the Convent of São Francisco was not only a religious center but also one of the most important educational hubs on the island of São Miguel. The reputation of its school attracted students from various parts of the island and even from the neighboring island of Santa Maria, which led Vila Franca do Campo to be affectionately nicknamed "the Micaelense Coimbra." The friars dedicated themselves intensely to education, shaping several generations.
The complex consists of the church and the imposing structure of the annexed convent. Although its urban surroundings have evolved over time, historical records indicate that in the early days of the convent there was a magnificent orange grove next to the buildings, contributing to a serene atmosphere. Currently, the complex of the Church and Convent of São Francisco maintains its striking presence in Vila Franca do Campo, presenting itself well-preserved as a testament to its long and rich history.
