Situated in Alto das Feteiras, in the parish of São Pedro, this hermitage is located on a strategic elevation in the municipality of Vila do Porto, on the island of Santa Maria. Its position grants it a privileged perspective over the surrounding area, making it a visible and easily identifiable landmark in the context of the local landscape.
The Hermitage of Nossa Senhora de Fátima distinguishes itself by being the first religious building, outside the Diocese of Leiria and Cova da Iria, to be erected in honor of Nossa Senhora de Fátima. Its construction began in 1925, after the blessing of the cornerstone, and was spearheaded by Father Virgínio Lopes Tavares, then parish priest of São Pedro. This site was officially consecrated in May 1928, after the arrival of the patron saint's image, which was blessed in the Matriz of Vila do Porto.
One of the hermitage's most striking elements is its staircase, designed to evoke the Holy Rosary. Composed of one hundred and fifty steps, each representing a "Hail Mary," and ten landings symbolizing the Mysteries of the Rosary or "Our Fathers," this structure is not just an access point, but a journey of meaning. The project for this staircase was designed by Álvaro Fernandes Serpa, and its construction was realized through a public subscription, which united the community in a collective effort. It was inaugurated in July 1933, and from its top, the Eucharistic Blessing was granted by the then Bishop of Angra.
From its location in Alto das Feteiras and, in particular, from the top of its staircase, the hermitage offers visitors panoramic views of the surroundings, inviting contemplation of Santa Maria's landscape. In 1942, a plaque was placed here to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Apparitions of Fátima. The site and the image of Our Lady benefited from restoration work between 2007 and 2008, reflecting the community's care and dedication in preserving this space of historical and spiritual value.
