The Vigia da Baleia (Whale Lookout) is located on Santa Maria Island, Azores, in the picturesque area of Maia, part of the parish of Santo Espírito, in the municipality of Vila do Porto. Situated on an elevated point of the coast, more than two hundred meters above sea level, its privileged position offers a wide and immersive perspective of the surrounding maritime and terrestrial environment.

From this location, it is possible to contemplate vast panoramas, encompassing the serene Bay of Maia, the southern coastline of the island and, notably, the Gonçalo Velho Lighthouse, which rises within the landscape. Its accessibility and the natural beauty of its setting make it a remarkable observation point.

Whaling Heritage

The name "Vigia da Baleia" (Whale Lookout) refers to the original function of this place. In the past, it served as a strategic post for observing cetaceans, a vital element for the whaling activity that profoundly marked Azorean history and economy. It was from here that the lookouts, essential figures in the community, scanned the horizon in search of whales, using smoke signals (and later radiotelephony) to guide the hunting boats.

This viewpoint therefore represents a tangible link with Santa Maria's whaling past. The structure found here is the result of a rehabilitation of the old watchtower, which was carefully adapted to allow visitors to enjoy the landscape and reflect on such a significant chapter in the island's history. On site, there are informative panels that deepen knowledge about this traditional activity.

Coastal Panoramas

The Vigia da Baleia offers a unique view of the coastal landscape. In addition to the vastness of the Atlantic and the beauty of Maia Bay, the observation of the ruins of the old Whale Factory and its whaling port, located below, stands out. These industrial remains bear witness to the labor and ingenuity of yesteryear, providing a setting where nature and history intertwine.

The elevation of the site allows for a clear perception of the dynamics of the south coast, where the blue of the ocean meets the green of the land.
