This windmill is located in the Loural area, part of the locality of Toledo, in the parish of Santo Amaro, municipality of Velas. Its elevated position, between 470 and 480 meters of altitude, gives it a notable presence in the surrounding rural landscape.
It is accessible by road and is located amidst fields, reflecting the predominantly agricultural environment of this area of São Jorge island.
It is an example of a fixed stone windmill, a traditional type of construction on the island of São Jorge. The main part, the body of the windmill, is built with stone and mortar, forming a solid structure that withstands time and the elements.
This type of windmill used the power of the wind to grind cereals, an essential process in the rural economy of yesteryear.
This windmill dates from 1969 or later, being a relatively recent testament to the tradition of windmills on the island. Its presence on maps from that era attests to its existence in the community.
However, time took its toll on its structure. By the end of the 20th century, in 1999, it was marked on maps as being in a state of ruin. What is observed today are the remains of its stone structure, stripped of the mechanisms and sails that once gave it life.
Even in its current state of ruin, this fixed stone windmill remains a characteristic element of the Loural landscape. Its silhouette against the sky, surrounded by green fields, offers a visual point of interest for those traversing this area.
It represents a connection to the island's agricultural past, marking the spot where the natural force of the wind was harnessed for the sustenance of the population. It is an invitation to imagine the life and work of yesteryear in this place.
