The Praia da Vitória Municipal Building (Paços do Concelho) is located in the heart of the city, at Largo Francisco Ornelas da Câmara. Its central position makes it a landmark in the main urban area, being easily identifiable in the historical center's landscape.
The history of this building dates back to the 16th century, with original construction believed to have begun around 1540. However, the primitive structure was severely affected and destroyed by the great earthquake that struck the island in 1614. The building we admire today is the result of the reconstruction that took place in the 17th century, aiming to maintain its function as the municipality's administrative center throughout the centuries. Its heritage value is nationally recognized, having been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1947.
The architecture of the Municipal Building (Paços do Concelho) is distinguished by several characteristic elements. The main facade is notable for the presence of its bell tower, located laterally, and by the imposing double and symmetrical staircase that leads to the upper floor. This staircase converges onto a balcony covered by a porch, creating a prominent space on the front. Access to the ground floor is through an opening beneath this balcony. Upon observing the building, one notices the elaborate ashlar lintels that mark each floor and the columns supporting the porch. Beneath the central column of the porch, there is a coat of arms with the Royal Arms of Portugal. On the tower, it is possible to see the engraving of the date 1596, which is associated with the completion of part of the structure or an important phase in its history.
