The Pico das Mentiras Mill is located in the Santa Cruz da Graciosa area, on Graciosa Island, Azores. It is situated on a small elevation with an unobstructed view to the sea, facing east. From this point, it is possible to contemplate the Praia islet, one of the most striking elements of the island's coastal landscape.

Access can be made by car close to the site, followed by a short pedestrian path on an asphalted surface. The surrounding environment is calm and rural, punctuated by volcanic stone walls, spontaneous vegetation, and agricultural fields. It is a peaceful place, ideal for a contemplative break and for those who appreciate minimally intervened areas.

Architecture and Characteristics

This fixed stone mill, built in the 19th century, maintains the traditional lines of Graciosa mills, with a cylindrical body in plastered and white-painted masonry, and a rotating wooden roof painted red. The sails are supported by robust masts, in a balanced ensemble that stands out on the horizon.

The circular threshing floor surrounding the mill also known as the base, was designed respecting the original features of vernacular architecture. The predominant colors, white and red, are typical of the region and give it a visually strong character, easily recognizable from a distance.

Historical Value and Present Day

The mill is classified as a Municipal Interest Property, recognizing its heritage and cultural importance in the context of the island. According to official records, it was in operation until at least 1989, being then operated by a local miller known as "Chico Bala."

Currently, although it no longer performs its original function, the mill is part of a structure adapted to rural housing. However, the intervention respected the design and identity of the building, making it possible to observe many of the original elements.

Environment and Experience

The place conveys a sense of tranquility and connection to nature. The contrast between the traditional construction and the open sky over the ocean reinforces the contemplative character of the visit. The absence of modern structures in the vicinity preserves the rural environment and the feeling of serene isolation.

The mill is also an excellent photographic spot. Its elevated position, natural framing, and careful preservation make it particularly photogenic, both at dawn and in the late afternoon, when the soft light highlights the colors and textures of the surrounding landscape.
