The Main Church of Santa Cruz da Graciosa is located in the heart of the village of Santa Cruz da Graciosa, occupying a central position in its main square.
This location serves as the urban area's reference point, facilitating access and orientation for visitors to the village, situated on Graciosa Island.
The history of the Main Church of Santa Cruz da Graciosa dates back to the island's early settlement, with an original temple built in the 15th century.
This was replaced by a later construction in the early 16th century. Its current form results from a significant reconstruction completed in 1701, as indicated by an inscription on the main facade.
Due to its value, this building is today recognized as a Property of Public Interest, integrated into the village's classified zone.
The church's exterior displays a predominantly Baroque style, with a notable play of contrasts between the white of its whitewashed walls and the black of the basalt stonework that outlines the moldings and quoins.
The main facade stands out with an imposing portal, surmounted by a large double window that illuminates the interior. Beside it, a robust bell tower, crowned by a pyramidal spire, completes the ensemble. Access to the church is via a staircase leading from a wide front square.
Inside, the church is divided into three naves, with the central one being taller, separated by arcades resting on cylindrical pillars. On the side walls, there are various chapels, adorned with altars and altarpieces in gilded carving, mostly from the 18th century.
Special attention should be paid to the panels of figurative tiles, dating from the 18th century, visible in side chapels such as those of Our Lady of Conception and Saint Anne, which enrich the environment.
The church houses a valuable collection of sacred artworks. One of its most notable highlights is the Altarpiece Polyptych, composed of 16th-century paintings on wood.
These works, attributed to the artist known as the Master of Arruda dos Vinhos, depict episodes related to the Cross of Christ and were integrated into a magnificent 18th-century gilded carving altarpiece, which dominates the chancel. Other elements of interest include a set of Sino-Portuguese canvases of Jesuit inspiration.
