This historical complex is located in Lugar do Pópulo de Cima, an area integrated into the locality of Atalhada. It is situated within the urbanization or area known as Vila Mar, in the municipality of Lagoa, on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores.
The history of the House and Hermitage of Nossa Senhora do Pópulo dates back to the seventeenth century. The construction of this complex, which included a larger dwelling house and an annexed hermitage, dates from that period. The chapel, in particular, bears the date of 1676 inscribed on its openings, thus marking the year of its construction.
Classified as a Property of Municipal Interest, this site is an example of the affluent residential architecture of its time, with the peculiarity of integrating a private religious space. The House and Hermitage of Nossa Senhora do Pópulo bear witness to the way of life and religious practices of past centuries in the region, constituting a point of interest for its historical and architectural value.
