A Legacy of Emigration

This manor house dates back to the return of Gaspar da Silva, an Azorean who emigrated to Hawaii and, in the late 19th century, returned to the Azores with a considerable fortune (then valued at over one hundred "contos" in pure silver) to build his residence.

The building reflects the history of Azorean emigration and the prosperity achieved overseas, serving today as a remarkable testament to the life and ambitions of one of its most prominent inhabitants.

Architectural Features and Distinctive Elements

The architecture of the Solar de Gaspar da Silva is distinguished by its grandeur and the harmony of its lines. It features symmetrical façades, adorned with ornate stonework balconies and window frames of simple, yet undeniably elegant, lines. The walls were built with local volcanic stone, with the door and window openings softened by light-colored frames.

In the adjoining churchyard, there is a private chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Miracles. Its crafted stonework complements the main complex, reinforcing the intimate character and uniqueness of the space.
