This remarkable residence has its roots in the early 19th century. Its construction is attributed to Luís Bernardo da Silveira Estrela, a figure linked to the military sphere and holding the title of Fidalgo Cavaleiro da Casa Real (Knight Nobleman of the Royal Household), notably for his loyalty to D. Miguel. Over time, the Solar da Mafoma has passed through several generations, remaining connected to families of the region. Its heritage value is officially recognized, being classified as a Property of Public Interest.

Architecture and Design

The Solar features architecture that reflects the traditional Azorean design for this type of stately residence. Its façade, considered noble in appearance, incorporates a coat of arms that evokes the historical lineages associated with it, such as the Correias, Silveiras, Botelhos, and Sampaios. Complementing the main building, there is an annexed chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso (Our Lady of Good Success). The interior of this chapel holds elements of artistic and religious interest, such as an elaborate gilded altarpiece, an altar frontal decorated with tiles, and an image of its patroness.

Connection to the Community

More than just a historical building, the Solar da Mafoma plays a vibrant role in local traditions. Annually, on June 29th, this manor transforms into the gathering point for one of the most emblematic moments of the São Pedro festivities: the Cavalhadas (traditional horse parades/jousts). It is in the house's courtyard that the Knights and Horses gather before setting off in a procession through the streets of Ribeira Seca towards the parish church, perpetuating a celebration with strong ties to the community.
