The Corvo Biological Reserve is located in Vila do Corvo, next to the area known as Topo, near the beach. It is an area designed as a pedestrian zone, free of car traffic, which harmoniously integrates into the island's coastal landscape.
Established in 2009, this reserve is a fundamental pillar in the conservation of Corvo's fauna. Its main purpose is to offer a safe and protected environment for seabird nesting. It is here that species such as the Cory's shearwater, the Madeiran storm-petrel, the Manx shearwater, and the Little shearwater find a sanctuary to reproduce, away from predators, contributing to the preservation of these highly important birds for the island.
For visitors, the reserve offers a well-designed interpretive trail. Along this circuit, it is possible to discover points of high landscape value, enjoy the natural beauty, and understand the history of the creation and maintenance of this space. The trail also helps identify the various seabird species that take refuge here and the native plants that make up the local ecosystem.
The Corvo Biological Reserve is not just an observation area, but also a true natural laboratory. Here, studies are developed and innovative approaches to seabird protection are tested. Recently, advanced rodent control techniques without the use of poisons and ultrasound systems to deter predators, such as cats, have been implemented. The area, which extends over four hectares, has been enriched with the planting of native flora such as Azorean tree heath, Azorean bellflower, heather, and Azorean juniper, and artificial plastic nests were replaced by more suitable clay pots. This continuous recovery and enhancement of the natural habitat reinforce Corvo's role as a Biosphere Reserve and Seabird Sanctuary.
