The Recolhimento and church of Santa Bárbara are located in the city of Ponta Delgada, in the Azores, specifically in the parish of São Sebastião. Its presence in the urban fabric of the Azorean capital gives it a role as a historical and religious landmark, fitting into the rich architectural landscape of the locality.
The history of this religious complex dates back to the 17th century, having been established by Father Roque Teixeira Fonseca. However, historical evidence points to an earlier foundation of the hermitage, between 1600 and 1612, at the initiative of Father Roque Teixeira's parents.
Initially, the Recolhimento functioned as an institution linked to the Order of Saint Augustine, whose nuns were distinguished by their white habit. Over time, its vocation expanded, and a considerable number of secular women were also housed in its dependencies.
The jurisdiction over the Recolhimento, which initially belonged to the Prior of the Convento da Graça, underwent changes over the years, partly due to the growing admission of secular women into the institution. The Recolhimento and the church faced considerable financial challenges for much of their existence.
It was not until 1833 that the institution managed to obtain a regulatory statute, an important milestone achieved after a visit from the Bishop of Angra do Heroísmo, who came to organize and consolidate its structure and operations.
Inside the church of Santa Bárbara, visitors can contemplate important elements of sacred art. The impressive main altar stands out, imposing in its size and ornamental richness. Another point of interest is the altar dedicated to the death of Saint Joseph, a remarkable work of wood carving.
This altar was created in 1770 by the Azorean master carver José Nunes de Carvalho, revealing the artistic mastery developed locally at the time.
