Praia Formosa has an ancient history, being already mentioned in 16th-century cartographic documents, such as Luís Teixeira's map of the Azores, dated 1584, where it appears under the name "Plaia Hermosa". Its past relevance was such that, in its vicinity, one of the archipelago's oldest forts was erected, crucial for the island's coastal defence.

Currently, the sandy stretch plays a central role in the island's cultural life, serving as the annual venue for the Festival Maré de Agosto. This music event is one of the oldest and most prominent in the Azores, bringing a vibrant atmosphere and a symbolic cultural dimension to the beach.
