Situated on the north coast of São Miguel island, in the Azores, Praia do Areal de Santa Bárbara is located in the village of Ribeira Seca, part of the municipality of Ribeira Grande. Its position offers direct contact with the Atlantic, being easily accessible from the surrounding urban area.
This sandy beach stands out as one of the island's most extensive, approximately one kilometer in length. Characterized by its dark sand of volcanic origin and clear waters, the beach is renowned for its wave conditions. Its water quality is annually certified by the Blue Flag. It is a supervised location, with attention to currents that require caution. The water temperature is mild, making it pleasant for swimming. The beach is also recognized as accessible, seeking to welcome all visitors.
Praia do Areal de Santa Bárbara's reputation extends internationally, particularly among wave sports enthusiasts. Its ideal conditions make it a sought-after location for surfing and bodyboarding, regularly hosting significant sporting events that attract athletes from various parts of the world. Beyond its sporting energy, the beach is equally appreciated for its scenic beauty, especially at dusk, when the landscape transforms, inviting photography and contemplation.
Along the beach, it is possible to observe remnants of a past era: the casemates. Built during World War II, these fortified structures served as coastal defense points. Currently, although some are affected by sea action, others remain visible, offering a glimpse into the region's military history and a symbolic link between the beach and its defensive past.
