Praia do Almoxarife is located on Faial Island, in the municipality of Horta, within an area with a rural profile of great natural beauty. This beach is situated between the elevations of Lomba da Espalamaca and Lomba dos Frades, and is crossed by Ribeira da Praia. Its position offers an environment of serenity, with an unobstructed view of the imposing Pico Island, which rises on the horizon.
Characterized by an extensive stretch of black volcanic sand, Praia do Almoxarife stands out in the Azorean landscape. The dark hue of the sand contrasts with the clear waters, creating a visually striking scenery. During the summer months, its size makes it a sought-after location for those seeking moments of seaside relaxation and tranquility, offering ample space to enjoy the coastline.
The name Praia do Almoxarife refers to an administrative past, associated with the figure of an "almoxarife" (almoner), a royal official responsible for managing goods or collecting taxes in the region. Beyond its toponymy, this beach holds particular significance in the history of Faial's settlement. It was on its sands that Joss van Hurtere and the first Flemish settlers disembarked around 1465, marking the beginning of exploration and settlement on Faial Island. More recently, in 1941, concrete and stone masonry military structures were erected in the cove, designed for coastal defense during World War II, which remain as a testament to its strategic importance.
The transparent waters of Praia do Almoxarife offer conditions for various water activities, including surfing, windsurfing, and diving. The beach is annually recognized with the "Blue Flag" distinction, an indicator of its environmental quality and safety. This recognition, combined with the verdant scenery that frames it, makes it a place where nature and the opportunity to enjoy the sea combine with an environment of calm, inviting serene contact with the Azorean landscape.
