Beyond its toponymy, this beach holds particular significance in the history of Faial's settlement. It was on its sands that Joss van Hurtere and the first Flemish settlers disembarked around 1465, marking the beginning of exploration and settlement on Faial Island. More recently, in 1941, concrete and stone masonry military structures were erected in the cove, designed for coastal defense during World War II, which remain as a testament to its strategic importance.
