São Lourenço Beach is located in the bay of the same name, on Santa Maria Island, part of the municipality of Vila do Porto, in the parish of Santa Bárbara. It is set in a natural amphitheatre-like scenery overlooking the sea, formed by volcanic slopes. Its position in the bay gives it a unique setting, characterized by the surrounding hillsides.
This beach is one of the largest in the Azores archipelago, with an extensive stretch of white sand that extends along the bay. From time to time, the sandy area is interspersed with low-lying rock formations that jut out into the sea. At the southern end of the bay, the Ilhéu de São Lourenço stands out, a curious rock formation that has a small natural pier and a cave inside, accessible only by boat, where stalactites and stalagmites can be observed.
This entire area, including the beach and its surroundings, is classified as the São Lourenço Bay Nature Reserve, a recognition of its ecological and landscape importance.
The slopes that frame São Lourenço Beach are one of its most distinctive aspects. These slopes, of very ancient volcanic origin, are occupied by vineyards planted in small terraces, known as "currais". These "currais" are delimited by living hedges or by low walls built with local basalt stone, creating a unique checkered pattern that extends across the landscape.
Vine cultivation in this area has a long tradition, with the grapes grown there being used to produce the well-known São Lourenço wine. This ancestral rural activity contributes significantly to the beauty and cultural character of the place.
São Lourenço Beach offers an environment conducive to leisure and various outdoor activities. Its natural characteristics, such as the extensive sandy area and the bay's waters, create favourable conditions for water sports such as surfing and canoeing. On the sandy area itself, beach volleyball can be played, taking advantage of the available space. The calm environment of the bay makes it an attractive place to enjoy the summer.
