The Municipal Garden, also known as the Public Garden, is located in the heart of Praia da Vitória city, on Terceira Island, Azores. Situated in the Santa Cruz urbanization, its main access is via Rua de Jesus. This green space occupies a central position in the urban landscape, serving as a landmark and one of the locality's main public spaces.

Visitors will find grassy flowerbeds, various trees offering shade on sunny days, and comfortable garden benches, perfect for a relaxing break in the middle of the city.

The Municipal Garden is an example of urban design conceived for well-being. It features a modern conception, with a circular central lawn that allows for various uses, from quiet recreation to informal games. The arrangement of shrub and herbaceous plants in the peripheral areas not only beautifies the space with its floristic value but also provides a sense of containment and protection, making the garden versatile and inviting for a variety of activities. Inside, a bandstand also stands out.

A Historical Testament

In the center of the garden, a statue stands out, paying homage to José Silvestre Ribeiro. This monument was erected by the population of Praia da Vitória on December 31, 1879, in memory and as a sign of profound gratitude. José Silvestre Ribeiro was an instrumental figure in the rebuilding of the city after the devastating earthquake of June 15, 1841, an event sadly known as the Caída da Praia (Fall of Praia). The statue is, therefore, a perennial reminder of local resilience and the crucial role this counselor played in its history.
