Praia da Salga is located on the south coast of Terceira Island, within Salga Bay, in the locality of Vila de São Sebastião, municipality of Angra do Heroísmo. It is a privileged area due to its serene nature, offering a calm environment for visitors.
Praia da Salga, more than a place for rest, is a fundamental historical stage for Terceira Island and for Portugal. It was in this bay that, on July 25, 1581, the famous Battle of Salga took place. In this confrontation, the island's forces resisted the Castilian landing, within the context of the Portuguese succession crisis.
A particularly notable moment of this defense involved Brianda Pereira, a local figure who, with other women, released a herd of wild bulls onto the invaders already on land, forcing them to retreat. This singular act contributed to Terceira remaining the only independent Portuguese territory for another two years, a period of great symbolism in national history.
Praia da Salga stands out for its natural conditions that invite enjoyment of the sea. This bay offers an ideal area for swimming and enjoying the sun, characterized by calm waters. One of its distinctive features is the presence of a natural pool, which complements the bathing experience.
In addition to the bathing area, the bay also features a small port, which adds a picturesque and practical dimension to the location.
The history of the Battle of Salga and the role of Brianda Pereira are perpetuated at the site. Next to the beach, there is a monument in homage to this remarkable figure, which recalls her courage and the community's spirit of resistance.
Also nearby, the House of Brianda Pereira stands as a place of great symbolic value for the island, bearing witness to the victory and perseverance of the Azorean people.
