Praia da Conceição is located in the stunning bay of Horta, a central spot in the city and on Faial Island. This beach is situated within the parish of Conceição, which is located in the northern part of the bay. From one of its sides, it is possible to observe the Ponta da Espalamaca promontory and, on days of good visibility, enjoy a beautiful view of Pico Island.

The Beach and the Waters

Characterized by a light brown sandy stretch, Praia da Conceição stands out for its fine, soft sand, with a remarkably volcanic origin. Its waters are generally calm with little swell, offering a serene environment for bathing. At low tide, the sandy area of this beach merges with the neighboring Praia da Duquesa, creating a continuous space for those who explore it. The Ribeira da Conceição, a watercourse that runs through the city, flows directly into this beach.

Memory and Nomenclature

The beach's name derives from the nearby Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, an element that contributes to its local identity. Interestingly, this location is also known as Praia da Alagoa, a name that evokes the history of the river which, upon flowing into the sandy area, occasionally formed a lagoon. Beyond its natural and religious relevance, Praia da Conceição holds particular historical significance: it was here, in 1893, that the official mooring of the first submarine telegraph cable to reach Faial was recorded, marking an important moment in the evolution of communications.

An Inviting Space

Praia da Conceição is a highly sought-after location, partly due to its easy integration into Horta's urban environment. Access to the beach is facilitated by stairs and a ramp, located next to the seafront wall. Adjacent to the sandy area, and as a complement to the experience, there is Parque da Alagoa, a green space that underwent revitalization and offers an area to enjoy nature. In addition to sea bathing, the site features a covered artificial swimming pool, providing an alternative for aquatic leisure moments.
