Praia da Areia is located in the town of Vila do Corvo, situated in the southern part of Corvo Island. This is a unique point of interest, as it is the only sandy beach on the entire island, whose coastline is predominantly characterized by rocky and steep landscapes. Its location offers a calm environment and easy access.
The sand of this beach stands out for its dark color and particular texture. It is formed by small grains resulting from the decomposition of volcanic rocks, ashes, and a myriad of tiny marine shells. Over thousands of years, these elements have accumulated in this sheltered corner of the coast, creating a natural composition that is a direct reflection of the island's volcanic origin.
The waters at Praia da Areia are known for their cleanliness and transparency, making it an appealing spot for a refreshing swim. The presence of natural rock formations in the sea offers protection, minimizing waves and providing a safe space for swimmers. Furthermore, marine life is rich, inviting exploration of the seabed.
The beach is also an ideal setting to enjoy the late afternoon. It allows for contemplation of a magnificent sunset, with views over the surrounding cliffs. It is a popular spot, sought after by both island visitors and residents, due to its tranquil environment and good accessibility, including for people with reduced mobility.
