The Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Our Lady of the Conception) is located in the city of Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, Azores, Portugal.

Historical Origins

The church's origins are linked to a convent that was initially located near the Paço do Conde. It was founded by the brothers Francisco and João de Andrade Albuquerque, with the permission of Pope Clement IX in 1664.

Construction and Duration

The construction of the church began in 1664 and lasted seven years until the first nuns entered the convent in 1671. The works were a significant project at the time.

Convent of the Conception

At its peak, the Convent of the Conception in 1723 housed 44 nuns, 15 servants, pupils, and novices. It possessed a considerable income, including wheat and money.

Architectural Style

The church maintains a notable façade in the Baroque style, which is an attraction in itself. It also features the coat of arms of the Andrades de Albuquerque next to the chancel.

Current Use

After the extinction of religious orders, the convent was used for public purposes, including the Civil Government and the General Board of the District. The old upper and lower choirs housed the Court of Appeal of the Azores and the Judicial Court of the District.
